Women’s Basketball second-half rally falls short at Baldwin Wallace

The Muskingum women's basketball team rallied from 13 points down in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell short at Baldwin Wallace, 90-83, on Saturday afternoon.

  • Olivia Besancon exploded with 32 points, on 6-of-11 shooting from the arc. She also went a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line, while adding a team-best five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
  • Alexandra Carson contributed 18 points, on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, which included hitting 4-of-6 from the arc. She also dished out a team-best four assists.
  • Emily Yeager led the reserves with 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
  • Kacie Leppla chipped in nine points and four rebounds.
  • The Muskies shot .406 (28-of-69) from the floor, .433 (13-of-30) from the arc, the second highest shooting percentage of the season, and went 14-of-19 (.737) from the free throw line.
  • Riley Schill led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
  • Hannah Fecht tallied 22 points and eight rebounds, while Rachel Womeldorf added 11 points.

Game Highlights

Baldwin Wallace took a commanding 13-point lead in the first quarter after going on a 9-5 run from 4:39 on the clock until 1:21 left in the first quarter. The Muskies were able to score four straight points to cut the deficit 25-16 at the end of the first frame. Muskingum began the second quarter by going on an 8-1 run, including back-to-back threes by Yeager and Besancon, to put MU within three points, 27-24, with 6:39 remaining. From that point forward, Baldwin Wallace poured out 16 points to make it a double-digit game at the half, 45-33. The Yellow Jackets shot .567 from the field in the first half.

The Muskies found themselves within two points mid-way through the third quarter after sparking a 18-8 run. Besancon's impressive shooting performance helped as she drained three trey's, with Carson adding a three of her own, making it 53-51, with 5:00 minutes to go in the third. Muskingum went scoreless in the last two minutes of the third, while Baldwin Wallace notched six points to push the lead, 67-57, at the end of the frame. Muskingum rallied from 13 points down at the 5:55 marker in the fourth quarter to get within two points, 83-81, with 38 seconds remaining in regulation. The Yellow Jackets held off the Muskies down the stretch connecting on 7-of-8 free throws in the final 34 seconds to win by seven. Muskingum ended the second half outscoring Baldwin Wallace, 50-45.
