Solid Pitching and Hot Bats leads softball past Capital

The Muskingum softball team erupted for 19 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep over Capital on Wednesday afternoon. The Muskie pitching staff fired back-to-back shutouts, while scattering nine total hits and 11 strikeouts. Muskingum claimed a 6-0 victory in game one and dominated the Comets in the nightcap, 13-0.

How It Happened – Game One

  • The Muskies struck the first run of the game off a Sarah Piteo sacrifice fly to left field, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
  • A Cristianna Boggs singles up the middle saw another Muskie runner cross the plate as the Muskies held a 2-0 lead after five innings of play.
  • With runners on the corners, no outs, and the go-ahead run at the plate the Comets looked to finally get on the scoreboard, but clutch Muskingum pitching and defensive stops didn't allow that to happen.
  • Muskingum plated their final four runs of the contest in the sixth securing a 6-0 victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum finished with six runs, on nine hits.
  • Senior Hannah Smith earned her 13th win in the circle for the Muskies. Smith threw five innings of work and registered six strikeouts.
  • Freshman Alyssa Marlatt earned her first save of the season. Marlatt pitched two innings of work and tallied one strikeout.
  • Seniors Katie Osburn and Cristianna Boggs led the Muskie offense with two hits and an RBI apiece.
  • Junior Sarah Piteo finished with one hit and two RBIs.
  • Junior Carlee Lamacz and freshman Kodi Brenner added an RBI.

How it Happened - Game Two

  • The Muskingum bats came alive in the first inning as the Muskies four runs off two hits. They held a 4-0 advantage.
  • The Muskie bats continued to stay hot in the third as the Muskies plated four more runs off five hits. Muskingum extended their lead 8-0 after three innings of play.
  • An Autumn Chorba two-run RBI double and Lynsey Dudley three-run blast ended the Muskie scoring barrage securing a Muskie 13-0 victory.

  • Muskingum finished with 13 runs off 13 hits.
  • Sophomore Madelyn Thomas earned her 10th win of the season after pitching four innings of work. Thomas registered three strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Kalie Eshelman guided the Muskie bats with two hits and two RBIs.
  • Freshman Lynsey Dudley finished with a home run and three RBIs.
  • Sophomore Autumn Chorba and freshman Olivia Angles finished with one hit and two RBIs apiece.
  • Osburn finished with two hits and an RBI, while Piteo added a hit and RBI.
  • Capital was led by Kelcie Schnitzler who had two hits.
