Softball splits doubleheader vs. Capital

The Muskingum softball team split a doubleheader against Capital on Wednesday. The Muskies fell in the opener, 8-4 and claimed the night cap, 4-2.

GAME ONE
 
In the first inning, Chevonne Hayslett blasted a two-run home run to give the Crusaders an early 2-0 lead. Lauren Kachure then cranked a grand slam to expand the gap to 6-0.
 
Senior Rachel Eberling fired up the Muskies in the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to center field, to trim the deficit to 6-1. Freshman Hannah Miller closed the inning for the Muskies with an RBI single through the right side to get the Muskies within four runs (6-2) of the Crusaders. 
 
Capital answered back with two runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning to widen the advantage to 8-2. The Muskies notched two runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning and had the bases loaded with one out before the Crusaders registered back-to-back outs to halt the Muskie comeback.
 
Eberling went 2-for-3 at the plate and guided the Muskies with one home run and one RBI. Miller notched a team-best two RBIs, while freshman Haley Hawk dished out one RBI and tallied one double. Senior Krissy Hughes swiped a team-best two stolen bases. 
 
Freshman Hannah Smith took the loss for the Muskies after allowing four runs on two hits. Sophomore Hannah Duff tossed six innings and secured three strikeouts. 
 
Kachure went 2-for-3 at the plate and led the Crusaders with a team-best five RBIs and tallied one home run. Hayslett went 2-for-4 at the plate and chipped in two RBIs. Brianna Reardon recorded her seventh victory of the season for Capital after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits, with two strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO
 
In the first inning, Capital secured one run on three hits to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jaelyn Meade retaliated with an RBI single to left center to tie up play at 1-1.
 
Muskingum locked in two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning to give them a two-run edge on the Crusaders (3-1).
 
In the third inning, Kristen Mellot flied out to center field, to score Alyx Slusher to trim the Crusader deficit to 3-2. Eberling then singled through the left side, to send Meade home and secure the 4-2 victory for the Muskies. 
 
Capital threatened in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out, but Eberling was able to induce a double play groundball to end the game.
 
Sophomore Bailey Waitkus led the charge with one RBI and one double. Meade, Eberling, and sophomore Francesca Stefano each chipped in one RBI.
 
Eberling secured her eighth victory of the season for the Muskies after pitching a complete game six-hitter, with two strikeouts. 
 
Kristen Mellott went 2-for-2 at the plate and guided the Crusaders with a team-best two RBIs. Chevonne Hayslett took the loss for Capital after pitching the entire contest, allowing four runs on eight hits.
