Softball drops OAC DH at Baldwin Wallace

The Muskingum softball team dropped a doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference action. The Yellow Jackets won the opener 5-4 and claimed the nightcap, 5-3.

The Basics

Inside the Numbers- Game One:

  • Muskingum scored four runs on eight hits.
  • Freshman Jaelyn Meade led the Muskies by going 3-for-3 at the plate, with one run scored, and two RBIs.
  • Junior Krissy Hughes went 2-for-4 at the plate, with two runs scored.
  • Senior Haylea Debolt went 2-for-4 at the dish, which included a double.
  • Junior Rachel Eberling produced an RBI.
  • Freshman Riley Powers tallied one hit.
  • Freshman Karsyn Shaffer scored a run.
  • Hughes scored the first run in the top of the first inning off Meade's single. Hughes opened the inning with a single bunt to reach base.
  • Shaffer scored the second run off Eberling's sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the third inning. Shaffer opened the inning with a walk.  
  • Hughes scored the third run off an RBI single by Meade, while Meade scored the fourth run on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh. Hughes opened the inning with a single down the left line.
  • Eberling dealt the loss for the Muskies allowing four runs on four hits in three innings of work.
  • Baldwin Wallace scored five runs on eight hits.
  • Alexis Boledovic led the Yellow Jackets by going 3-for-4 at the plate, with an RBI, and run scored.
  • Abby Cosart secured the win after pitching a complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits.

Inside the Numbers- Game Two:

  • Muskingum scored three runs on seven hits.
  • Hughes paced the Muskies by going 2-for-4 at the plate, with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Junior Kierstyn Czuchran went 2-for-2 at the dish, which included a double.
  • Eberling finished the contest with a team-high two RBIs.
  • Debolt, Eberling, and Meade each collected a hit.
  • Debolt and Eberling each scored a run.
  • Hughes opened the first inning with a solo homer to collect Muskingum's first run of the game.
  • Debolt hit a single to be the first Muskie to reach on base in the fourth inning. Eberling then hit a two-run dinger to register the second and third run.  
  • Freshman pitcher Hannah Duff took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work.
  • Baldwin Wallace scored five runs on eight hits.
  • Sami Minor went 2-for-4 at the dish with two runs scored for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Erica English finished with a team-best two RBIs.
  • Sam Mott grabbed the win in the circle after pitching a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits, and recorded eight strikeouts.

Game Highlights

In game one, Muskingum got on the scoreboard early with an RBI single by Meade to take a 1-0 advantage. Baldwin Wallace scored two runs in the bottom of the first and one in the second to take a 3-1 lead. A sacrifice fly by Eberling in the top of the third inning allowed Shaffer to score the Muskies second run to get within one, 3-2. The Yellow Jackets tacked on one run in the third and one in the fifth to push their lead, 5-2. With one out in the top of the seventh inning and Hughes at second base, Meade singled up the middle, bringing in Hughes to score the third run. A single by Debolt on the next play advanced Meade to second, but an infield fly to the pitcher by Eberling gave the Muskies the second out. Meade then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch by the Yellow Jackets gave Meade the opportunity to score the fourth run. Freshman Bailey Waitkus was walked on the next at-bat, and then senior Melissa Maiorano struck out swinging to end the game.    

Muskingum started game two with a solo homer by Hughes in the top of the first inning to put Muskingum ahead, 1-0. An RBI single by Baldwin Wallace in the bottom of the third inning tied the contest at 1-1. The Muskies regained the lead in the top of the fourth when Eberling pounded a two-run dinger, making it 3-1. The Yellow Jackets plated one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to increase their lead 5-3. With one out in the top of the seventh, Czuchran doubled to right center. Up next to bat was freshman pinch hitter Alexia Dowdle, who flied out to right field and Powers was walked at the next at-bat. Hughes then struck out swinging which ended the contest.

  • Muskingum returns to action on Thursday, April 19 as they welcome Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta to the Donna J. Newberry Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
