Softball splits doubleheader against Denison

The Muskingum softball team split its doubleheader with Dension on Monday evening winning game one, 4-2 and dropping game two, 5-3 at the Donna J. Newberry Field.

The Basics 

  • Records: Muskingum (16-2 overall), Denison (4-2 overall)
  • Location: New Concord, Ohio – Donna J. Newberry Field 

Inside the Numbers- Game One:

  • Muskingum scored four runs on eight hits.
  • Junior Krissy Hughes led the offensive attack as she went 2-for-3 at the plate, which included a home run and a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
  • Freshman Karsyn Shaffer also paced the Muskies by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
  • Senior Haylea Debolt and junior Rachel Eberling also added one RBI each.
  • Eberling claimed the win in the circle pitching a complete game, surrendering two runs on eight hits, and four strikeouts.

Inside the Numbers- Game Two:

  • Muskingum scored three runs on seven hits
  • Debolt led the Muskies by going 2-for-3 at the plate, which included a home run, with one run scored and one RBI.
  • Eberling and sophomore Jolyn Shunk also chipped in one RBI each.
  • Freshman Hannah Duff tossed the loss for Muskingum allowing three runs on three hits.

Game Highlights

In the bottom of the third inning, Muskingum plated its first two runs of the game to take the lead. A run scored by Denison in the top of the fifth inning cut Muskingum's led in half, 2-1. A two-run homer to right field by Hughes in the bottom of the fifth extended the Muskies lead, 4-1. The Big Red notched another run in the top of the sixth, but that would the final one as the Muskies held on to win game one.

Denison took an early lead over Muskingum in game two as they scored three runs in the top of the second. The Muskies then got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Debolt hit a solo home run to right field to make it 3-1. A solo home run and an RBI single by the Big Red in the top of the fifth pushed their lead to 5-1. A sacrifice fly by Eberling in the bottom of the sixth and an RBI single by Shunk in the bottom of the seventh would not be enough for the Muskies as they dropped game two.

  • Muskingum returns to action on Friday, March 30 as they take on Ohio Athletic Conference foe Otterbein in a doubleheader at Donna J. Newberry Field. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
