Softball sweeps Washington & Jefferson in season finale

The Muskingum softball team swept Washington & Jefferson in its season finale on Sunday afternoon at Donna J. Newberry Field. Muskingum won the opener 8-5 and claimed the nightcap in five innings, 11-3.

The Basics 

  • Records: Muskingum (17-23 overall), Washington & Jefferon (4-25 overall)
  • Location: New Concord, Ohio - Donna J. Newberry Field 

Game One

  • Prior to the contest, Muskingum recognized seniors Jessica Matthews and Haley Dotson.
  • Junior Abigail Orr led the Muskies going 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Rachel Eberling went 2-for-2 with a RBI and three runs scored.
  • In the circle, junior Haylea Debolt claimed the win pitching two innings allowing one run on two hits.
  • As a team, Muskingum scored eight runs on eight hits.
  • Wash. & Jeff. was led by Rachel Marx going 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
  • The Presidents scored five runs on seven hits.
  • Muskingum struck first in the bottom of the second inning following a sequence of President errors, 2-0.
  • Washington & Jefferson got one run back in the top of the fourth inning and claimed its first lead of the contest in the top of the fifth inning scoring three runs, 4-3.
  • The Muskies used a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth scoring five runs on three hits to capture the win.

Game Two

  • Muskingum scored 11 runs on 16 hits.
  • The Muskies were led in the contest by freshman Raygan Reyes going 2-for-2 with two RBI's and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Cassie Thomas finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • Eberling claimed the win in the circle pitching three innings surrendering one hit.
  • The Presidents were led by Meghan Staab going 1-for-2 with a RBI. 
  • The Muskies scored early and often plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Muskingum tacked on another run in the bottom of the second inning, two in the third inning and one in the fourth inning to extend its lead, 10-0.
  • Wash. & Jeff. responded scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning, before sophomore Kylie Zifer provided the clutch hit securing the win.
