Muskingum beats Heidelberg in exciting OT thriller
Muskingum freshman Trey Singleton hit a heroic fadeaway three-point shot as time expired to tie the game and Muskingum rode the momentum to a thrilling 89-83 overtime win against Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg on Saturday afternoon in the Anne C. Steele Center.

  • Senior Devon Peart tied his career-high of 34 points, shooting 9-for-19 (47.4%) from the field and 15-for-17 (88.2%) from the free-throw line.
  • Freshman Trey Singleton notched a career-high of 20 points, going 8-for-11 (72.7%) from the field and 4-for-4 (100.0%) from three-point range.
  • Muskingum erased a 16-point deficit over the final five minutes of the game to set the stage for Singleton's game-tying shot at the buzzer.
  • Sophomore Mitch Clark tallied 12 points and dished out three assists.
  • Senior Jalen Paige added 10 points, five assists, and five rebounds.
  • As a team, the Muskies went 28-for-65 (43.1%) from the field and 9-for-24 from the arc (37.5%).
  • Myron Prewitt guided Heidelberg's offense with 23 points while Josh Dixon had 14 points.
  • Heidelberg made 44.7% of their shots (34-for-76), went 7-for-31 from the arc (22.6%), and ended the contest shooting 8-for-12 from the free-throw line (66.7%).
  • The teams went back-and-forth during the opening minutes of play with neither squad leading by more than four points. At the 11-minute mark, Heidelberg took a six-point lead (15-9) after Tayte Lentz made a layup. This led to an 8-4 span for the Student Princes, putting them up (23-13) with 6:43 left in the half. Singleton hit a triple at the 5:54 juncture to halt Heidelberg's momentum. In the final minutes of the half, the Student Princes outscored the Muskies (10-4), entering the break with a 33-22 lead.

  • Heidelberg came out firing in the second half, increasing their lead to 15 points (49-34) after James Hanley hit a bucket at the 13:23 mark. The Student Princes maintained a dominant lead over the next seven minutes, making the score read 63-47 with 6:53 on the clock. Then, Paige drained a three-pointer and ignited a 19-5 spurt for the Muskies, bringing them within two points (68-66) of Heidelberg with 2:02 remaining. The Student Princes were leading (74-71) with three seconds left in the game when Singleton knocked down a game-saving three-pointer off an assist from Peart, tying the game at 74 and sending it into overtime.

  • In the first two and a half minutes, both teams scored six points each. Then, Peart drilled a jumper and sparked a 9-3 span for the Muskies, giving them a six-point lead. Muskingum went on to secure an 89-83 victory against OAC opponent Heidelberg. 

  • Muskingum next travels to Wilmington on Wednesday, January 16. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
