Marcus Dempsey named CoSIDA Academic All-American for Men’s Basketball

Muskingum University sophomore guard Marcus Dempsey was named to the 2017-18 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division III Men's Basketball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Dempsey tabs his first Academic All-American Third Team honors and becomes the fifth Muskingum men's basketball player to achieve Academic All-American status in the history of the program.

Dempsey, an interdisciplinary major, finished the regular season ranked first in the Ohio Athletic Conference and third in Division III in points per game (30.3). He ended the season shooting .506 from the field and .400 from the arc, while collecting 113 rebounds, 62 assists, and 20 steals. His career/season-high was 57 points, which set the school record for points scored in a game at Oberlin on December 30, 2017. The previous record was 54 points set in 1912-13 by Babe Arnold. Dempsey concluded the season with 758 points, which also broke the most points scored in a season record. The previous record was 559 points set in 1990-1991 by Andy Moore. Lastly, Dempsey scored his 1,000 career point in the Muskies 112-103 win against then NCAA Division III #23 John Carroll, becoming the 32nd Muskie to achieve this milestone.

In addition to earning Academic All-American distinction, Dempsey has also been honored with First Team All-OAC, Academic All-OAC Honor Roll, Second Team All-Great Lakes Region, and D3hoops.com Second Team All-Region accolades.

Last month, Dempsey was named to the 2017-18 Academic All-District First Team and advanced to the national Academic All-American ballot. The student-athlete needed to have a least a 3.30 grade point average.
