Football hosts ONU for OAC opener

The Muskingum football team will host Ohio Northern on Saturday, September 14, in McConagha Stadium. The game is slated for 1:30 p.m. and will mark the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Muskies enter the contest at 1-0 after beating Waynesburg in their home/season-opener last Saturday, 31-20. The win marked the second straight year that Muskingum has started 1-0 under Head Coach Erik Ieuter. Muskingum ended the game with 391 yards (212 rushing/179 passing) of offense on 70 plays. The Muskies also erupted for 29 first downs and ended the outing 5-of-6 in the red zone. Muskingum held a 34:34 to 25:26 time of possession edge. 

The offensive onslaught was led by junior quarterback captain Brody Hahn who went 16-of-21 passing for 179 yards and one touchdown. He also added 93 rushing yards on 14 totes with three scores. Senior running back captain Bernard Johnson rushed for 97 yards on 21 carries and had a long run of 25 yards. Freshman wide receiver Tyler Heinecke led the Muskies with five grabs for 66 yards, while senior wideout Darius Hayes-Carruth had three receptions for 53 yards.

Defensively, the Muskies clamped down on Waynesburg and held the Yellow Jackets to just 13 first downs and 207 yards of offense. Senior defensive lineman captain Tim Ousley and junior linebacker Nehemiah Bowie led the strong effort with six tackles each. Ousley also added 1.5 sacks for four yards and two pass breakups. The freshmen defensive backs duo of Yo-Vonne Roberts and Kalib Dailey each recorded their first career interception.

Sophomore kicker Gavin Costello connected on a 30-yard field goal, while Johnson averaged 21.3 yards per kickoff return to pace special teams' play. 

Ohio Northern, who leads the all-time series 30-24-2, arrives in New Concord with an 0-1 record after suffering a 42-13 setback at Denison last Saturday. The Polar Bears mustered 224 yards of offense and 14 first downs while allowing 453 yards of offense and 24 first downs.

Senior quarterback Anthony McFadden led the offense going 9-of-17 for 100 yards and one score. He also rushed for 64 yards and one touchdown on 20 totes. Junior running back Christiaan Williams rushed for 59 yards on 18 carries and had a long run of 21 yards. Sophomore receiver Austin Eick led the team with four receptions for 39 yards and one score. Junior receiver A.J. Marks had three grabs for 30 yards. 

Senior Mark Niles had 13 tackles, and a fumble recovery and senior David Haseleu had 11 tackles to lead the ONU defense.

Halftime Recognition

The Muskingum softball team will be presented their 2019 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship rings at halftime. The Muskies won the regular-season title with a 15-3 conference record. Muskingum concluded regular-season play with a 31-9 overall record. Furthermore, senior outfielder Krissy Hughes will be honored with her NFCA Third Team All-American award.

GameDay Information

The Touchdown Tent, which is located behind the east end zone, provides field-level viewing, snacks, and drinks to members who join the Muskie Athletic Club at the MVP level and above. Access to the Touchdown Tent is reserved for members 21 and over.

Muskingum's M Zone student section is located behind the west end zone. Muskie students are encouraged to bring chairs, couches, and blankets to be the 12th man for the Muskie football team.

The Muskie Tailgate area for parents, alumni, and fans is located in the Stag/Ulster parking lot and features Muskingum's student radio station WMCO 90.7 FM. WMCO's entertainment will start at 11:00 a.m., and move to a live broadcast from 12:00-1:00 p.m. that will feature interviews with Muskingum administrators, coaches, and student-athletes. The visiting tailgate area is located in the Cambridge parking lot. The Memorial/Moore parking lot located behind McConagha Stadium is reserved for Muskingum residential student parking only.
