Football suffers last-second setback at Heidelberg

The Muskingum football team suffered a last-second setback at Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg on Saturday, 27-24.

How It Happened

  • Muskingum sophomore wide out Darius Hayes-Carruth hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass from senior Griffin Degener to give the Muskies a 24-20 lead with 2:29 to play in the game.
  • Heidelberg responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in Bryan Lacey scoring on a two-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds on the clock to lift the Student Princes to the comeback win. The 'Berg completed a critical fourth and seven during the game-winning drive.
  • Heidelberg took a 6-3 lead into intermission. The Muskie score was a 35-yard field goal by senior Cody Dent.
  • Muskingum took its first lead of the game (10-6) in the third quarter when Degener tossed a 46-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Jordan Scanlon. The play capped off a seven-play, 72-yard drive.
  • The fourth quarter was a scoring outburst for both teams. Heidelberg scored 21 points, while the Muskies put 14 on the scoreboard. 
  • Muskingum's first score in the final frame came on senior Dorian Maynard's 28-yard interception return for a touchdown.

  • The Muskies held a dominating 39:51-20:09 advantage in time of possession.
  • Degener passed for a career-high 270 yards on 23-of-32 passing with two touchdowns.
