ONU deals football Homecoming setback

The Muskingum football team was dealt a 42-7 Homecoming setback by Ohio Northern on Saturday afternoon in McConagha Stadium. 

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (0-7 overall, 0-6 OAC), Ohio Northern (5-2 overall, 4-2 OAC)
  • Location: New Concord, Ohio - at McConagha Stadium

Halftime Honors

  • At halftime of the contest, Muskingum recognized the 2015 Athletic Hall of Fame Class that features Jeff Heacock '76 (football), Wade Chapman '02 (wrestling), Heather Shingary Byard '98 (softball), Jessica Gates Grandey '03 (women's basketball) and Jack Lofstrom '58 (football). 
  • The Muskie athletic department also honored retiring Muskingum President Anne C. Steele .

How It Happened

  • Ohio Northern grabbed the momentum on the opening kickoff with a 91-yard return for a touchdown by Reed Allen. The early jolt of confidence propelled the Polar Bears to score the opening 42 points of the game en route to the road win.
  • Muskingum found the end zone in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter when freshman running back Jordan Scanlon scored on a one-yard touchdown run. The score capped off a 19-play, 83-yard drive that chewed 9:29 off the clock.
  • Muskingum freshman quarterback Kevin Patterson made his first career start and went 12-of-20 for 62 yards, with one interception. 
  • Freshman running back Nick Asturi led the Muskie ground attack with 57 yards on 10 totes.
  • Junior back Melvin Smith added 40 yards on nine carries.
  • The freshmen duo of tight end Granger Long and receiver Darius Hayes-Carruth each grabbed four receptions. Long ended with 15 yards receiving and Hayes-Carruth had 29 yards.
  • Muskingum ended the game with 214 yards of total offense.
  • Sophomore linebacker Mick Fishel and freshman defensive back Cle'Von Burch led the Muskie defense with 11 stops each.
  • Ohio Northern churned out 274 yards of offense.
  • Ricardo Johnson passed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-17 passing. He also added 76 yards and one score on the ground.
  • Justin Magazine rushed for 89 yards and two scores. He also had three receptions for 25 yards with a score.
  • Zach Meronoff paced the ONU defense with nine hits and one sack for six yards.
