Waynesburg stings football in season opener

The Muskingum football team was stung in its season opener at Waynesburg on Saturday afternoon, 33-0.

The Muskies ended the outing with 278 yards of offense on 65 plays. Muskingum churned out 185 yards on the ground and mustered 93 through the air.

Junior quarterback Cody Williams went 7-of-20 for 93 yards with two interceptions. He also added 51 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Freshman running back William Cole Young led the ground game with 76 yards on 11 totes.

Freshman Aron Sutton led the receivers with two grabs for 11 yards. Freshman receiver Damon Jones had one reception for 41 yards and senior Marvin Morris snared one pass for 25 yards.

The Muskie defense was led by junior linebacker Zach Barry who had 11 stops. Junior linebacker Chaney Fulton had nine stops and one sack for nine yards, while sophomore defensive back Brandon Walker logged eight tackles.

The Muskie special teams were paced by sophomore punter Samuel Green who averaged 38.1 yards per punt and boomed a career-best 76 yarder, while also placing one punt inside the 20.

Waynesburg took a 13-0 lead into the break and scored two touchdowns early in the third frame to take control of the outing. The Yellow Jackets ended the contest with 405 yards of offense, which included 276 yards passing.

Carter Hill directed the offense going 13-of-22 for 248 yards and one touchdown. He also added a score on the ground.

Jerry Lawman and Jake Forsythe each registered a rushing touchdown and Bernie Thompson hauled in four receptions for 119 yards to help lead the offense.

Aaron Palmer had eight tackles and Mitch Vacek and Josh Tolliver each had five stops. Josh Mundell notched two interceptions, including one he returned for a 41-yard touchdown to help pace the Yellow Jackets defensive effort.

The Muskies are off next week before opening Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday, September 20 against Mount Union. The home opener is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start in McConagha Stadium.
