Baseball drops doubleheader against Heidelberg

The Muskingum baseball team dropped game one of its doubleheader against Heidelberg 13-3. In game two the Muskies fell 11-5.

Muskingum jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Brett Carson smashed an RBI single to left field. Then, freshman Chayce Lundell hit an RBI single to left field, allowing Carson to score.

In the top of the third inning, Heidelberg answered by scoring a run on a sacrifice fly.

Muskingum added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth when senior Michael Pagano crushed a home run over the right field fence, making it 3-1.

However, the Student Princes rallied over the next two innings, scoring 12 runs en route to their ninth OAC victory.

Junior Josh Bigrigg took the loss for Muskingum on the mound. Bigrigg pitched 1.0 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits while striking out one batter. Pitcher Tristan Phillips earned the win for Heidelberg. Phillips pitched 2.0 innings and allowed no runs on three hits while notching one strikeout. 

Carson led the Muskies with one run on two hits and one RBI. Kyle Jenkins guided Heidelberg with two runs on five hits and two RBIs.

Heidelberg jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

The Student Princes added a run in the top of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. However, the Muskies retaliated in the bottom of the inning when freshman Sam Pinckert hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

Over the next four innings, Heidelberg added four runs to make it 9-1.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Pagano hit an RBI single sparked the Muskie offense. Sophomore Matt Stewart singled to left field, bringing in Carson and Van Wey. The Muskie rally continued as Lundell singled up the middle, allowing Pagano to come home and make it 9-5.

Heidelberg subdued the Muskie attack by scoring two runs in the top of the ninth as they went on to win game two of the OAC doubleheader.

Freshman Craig Nixon took the loss for Muskingum. Nixon pitched 3.1 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. Alex Sir Louis secured the win for the Student Princes. He allowed one run on five hits in 7.0 innings of work. 

Stewart led the Muskies at the plate with one hit and two RBIs. Matt Psychas guided Heidelberg with one run on two hits and two RBIs. 

The Muskies next travel to La Roche on Thursday, April 25. Game one of the slated doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
