Kyle Schmitgen breaks career appearance record against #2-ranked Wooster

Senior pitcher Kyle Schmitgen broke the career appearance school record, while the Muskingum baseball team fell against non-conference opponent #2-ranked Wooster on Friday evening, 24-14.

Notable:

  • Today marked the 57th game that senior Kyle Schmitgen has pitched in, which now makes him the career appearance record holder. The previous record was 56 set by Levi Shaw from 2006-2009.  

The Basics 

  • Records: Muskingum (12-17 overall), Wooster (23-3 overall)

Inside the Numbers:

  • Muskingum scored 14 runs on 16 hits and committed five errors.
  • Freshman Matt Stewart led the squad by going 3-for-5 at the plate, which included two doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs.
  • Senior Brad Donathan went 2-for-3 at the plate, which included a home run, a run scored, and four RBIs.
  • Junior Nate Mejia went 2-for-3 at the dish with three runs scored.
  • Freshman Luke Currie went 2-for-4 at the plate, which included a double, and two runs scored.
  • Junior Marc Ibarra, sophomore Holden Martin, and freshman Caden Mumaw each tallied two hits. Martin also collected two RBIs.
  • Ibarra, junior Michael Pagano, and Mumaw each produced an RBI.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Muskies notched their first seven runs. Mejia scored the first run of the contest off Stewart's double down the left field line. Mejia singled to right center to open the inning. Stewart then scored the second run off Martin's single through the left side. The next five runs happened back-to-back-to-back. With bases loaded, Pagano reached base from a hit-by-pitch, allowing Harper to score the third run. Harper reached base on a walk. Martin scored the fourth run off a wild pitch. Donathan was next at-bat and blasted a three-run homer, allowing Pagano and Ibarra to score. Ibarra reached base from a single to center field.   
  • A double from Donathan allowed Harper to score the eighth run in the sixth inning. Harper opened the inning with a walk.
  • Stewart doubled to center field, allowing Currie and Mejia to score the ninth and tenth run, respectively in the seventh. Mejia opened the inning with a single, while Currie reached base from a hit-by-pitch
  • The Muskies notched four runs in the ninth inning. Mumaw opened the ninth with a solo home run, his first of the season, to give Muskingum the 11th run. Mejia scored the 12th run off Stewart's single to center field. Mejia reached on base off a hit-by-pitch. Martin grounded out to the third baseman, allowing Currie to score the 13th run. Currie hit a double to get on base. Ibarra singled to right field, which brought in Stewart to score the final run of the evening.    
  • Senior pitcher Kyle Schmitgen took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits.
  • Wooster scored 24 runs on 24 hits.
  • Chandler Dippman who went 5-for-5 at the plate, which included a double, three RBIs and four runs scored, led the Fighting Scots.
  • Relief pitcher Wyatt Linde claimed the win from the mound for the Fighting Scots.

Game Highlights

Wooster plated three runs in the top of the first, three in the second, four in the third, and three in the fifth to take a commanding 13-0 lead. Muskingum responded in the bottom of the fifth as they spurted seven runs to get within six, 13-7. That was the closes the Muskies got as the Fighting Scots scored four runs in the sixth, three in the seventh, two in the eighth, and two in the ninth to take control of the game.
