Otterbein takes two from Muskingum

The Muskingum baseball team fell at Otterbein by the final scores of 8-4 and 10-3 on Thursday evening.  

The Basics 

  • Records: Muskingum (9-10 overall, 2-2 Ohio Athletic Conference), Otterbein (13-7 overall, 2-2 Ohio Athletic Conference)
  • Location: Westerville, Ohio - Fishbaugh Field 

Inside the Numbers- Game One:

  • Muskingum scored four runs on nine hits.
  • Freshman Matt Stewart led the Muskies by going 3-for-4 at the plate, which included two doubles, and two runs scored.
  • Junior Ben Van Wey went 2-for-2 at the dish, with two RBIs, and a run scored.
  • Senior Brad Donathan went 2-for-4 at the plate.
  • Junior Evan Hinds took the loss after throwing in 6.2 innings, allowing five runs, seven hits, and notched four strikeouts.

Inside the Numbers- Game Two:

  • Muskingum scored three runs on five hits.
  • Donathan belted a double and scored a run.
  • Junior Michael Pagano also collected one hit and one RBI.
  • Freshman Luke Currie, freshman Nick Bilyeu, and Stewart each tallied one hit.
  • Van Wey also chipped in an RBI.
  • Freshman pitcher Nolan Fernandes took the loss from the mound, allowing eight runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work, and recorded six strikeouts.

Game Highlights

A sacrifice fly by Eddie Harper and an RBI single by Van Wey in the top of the third inning gave the team the early 2-0 start in game one. Otterbein then jumped ahead as they busted out two runs in the bottom of the fourth and three in the seventh to take a 6-2 advantage. The Muskies gathered two more runs in the top of the eighth to make it 6-4. The Cardinals accrued two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Muskingum was unable to produce any runs in the top of the ninth, giving the hosts the 8-4 OAC win.

Game two started off with both teams trading off runs as Otterbein collected one in the bottom of the first and second, while Muskingum got two runs in the top of the third. The score stayed at a 2-2 tie until Pagano singled to center field to bring Donathan across the plate to put Muskingum in front, 3-2, at the top of the fifth. From the bottom of the fifth until the end of the contest, the Cardinals were red hot as they posted eight more runs to secure the victory in game two.

  • Muskingum will continue conference play on the road as they travel to John Carroll on Saturday, April 7. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
