Baseball falls in tough twinbill vs. Marietta

The Muskingum baseball team lost a twinbill against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta on Wednesday. The Pioneers took the opener 2-1 in 10 innings and claimed the nightcap, 9-4.

In the opener, Marc Ibarra delivered a clutch two-out hit in the bottom of the ninth to score Austin DeVore to tie the game at 1-1. The Muskies ended the inning with the bases loaded.

Marietta plated a run in the top of the 10th to take a 2-1 edge. The Muskies threatened in the bottom of the 10th and had the bases loaded with two outs when the game concluded.

Muskingum ended the outing with one run on eight hits, with one error. Joe Shumar led the way with two hits, while Dallas Allen belted a double. The Muskies also recorded three double plays.

Brandon Bush started the game and went 8.2 strong innings and allowed one run on nine hits. Kyle Schmitgen took the loss after tossing 1.1 innings of relief and allowing one run on two hits.

In the nightcap, Marietta (8-9, 3-1) scored three runs in the top of the first and added a pair in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Muskingum scored one run in the seventh on a DeVore home run and tallied three runs in the eighth, which was highlighted by a DeVore two-run single. 

The Pioneers added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth on Greg Peffley's three-run home run.

Muskingum ended the game with six hits. Shumar helped lead the effort with one RBI on a bases loaded walk.

Evan Hinds took the loss after going seven innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Marietta mustered 11 hits. Eric White, Mike Hale, Connor Golden and Chandler Palyas all notched an RBI.

Scott Oberhelman fired a complete game and scattered six hits and allowed four runs.

Muskingum (8-11, 1-3) next hosts Heidelberg on Saturday, April 8. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
