Baseball concludes spring trip with setback vs. Albion

The Muskingum baseball team concluded its spring trip with an 8-0 loss against Albion. The Muskies ended play at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida with a 3-6 record. 

The Britons held the Muskies to five hits. Sophomore Michael Pagano led the way with two hits. Junior Eddie Harper, senior Auston DeVore and sophomore Nate Mejia (double) all had one hit. Freshman Bryce Husted took the loss after going five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Muskingum next plays at Ohio Christian on Wednesday, March 15. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.

Friday, March 11 - The Muskingum baseball team dropped a twinbill against Ursinus at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida on Friday. The Bears took the opener 6-3 and won game two, 8-0.

In the opener, Ursinus scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to erase a 3-2 deficit en route to the 6-3 seven-inning win. Senior Joe Shumar led the Muskies with two RBIs and sophomore Michael Pagano added one RBI. Muskingum scattered eight hits in the contest. Sophomore Evan Hinds took the loss after pitching six innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits.

In game two, Muskingum was held to just three hits in the seven-inning affair. Ursinus racked up eight runs on 13 hits to seal the sweep.

Muskingum completes it's Spring Break trip against Albion on Saturday, March 11. Game time is slated for 10:00 a.m.

Thursday, March 10 - The Muskingum baseball team overpowered Penn-State Abington at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida on Thursday, 18-8. Muskingum has now scored 52 runs in its last three contests.

The Muskies jumped out to an 11-0 lead after three innings en route to cruising to their third straight win. Sophomore Michael Pagano led the way with two doubles and three RBIs. Senior Matt Lynn added a 3-for-3 day with four runs scored, two doubles and two RBIs. Junior Eddie Harper, senior Austin DeVore, senior Dallas Allen and sophomore Ben Van Wey all recorded two RBIs. Muskingum ended the outing with 18 runs on 18 hits.

Sophomore Darien Smith started the game and went 4.1 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on one hit. He walked seven and struck out six. Freshman Josh Bigrigg tossed 2.2 innings of relief and allowed four runs on four hits, while senior Brandon Bush fired one inning and allowed one hit.

Muskingum next plays Ursinus for a doubleheader on Friday, March 10. Game time is slated for 9:00 a.m.

Wednesday, March 9 - The Muskingum baseball team stayed hot at the plate en route to a 15-12 win against New Jersey City on Wednesday morning at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida. Muskingum has now scored 34 runs in its last two contests.

Sophomore Michael Pagano led the charge going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and one run scored. Senior Matt Lynn, senior Joe Shumar and sophomore Marc Ibarra all registered a pair of RBIs. Senior Dallas Allen added three hits to aid the Muskie attack. Muskingum scored 15 runs on 14 hits. 

Junior pitcher Kyle Schmitgen earned the win in relief after tossing 4.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts.

The Muskies next play Penn St.-Abington on Wednesday, March 9. Game time is slated for 12:30 p.m.

Tuesday, March 7 - The Muskingum baseball team crushed St. Vincent at the RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday morning, 19-3. The 19-run outburst are the most runs scored by a Muskie squad since the 2013 season when Muskingum beat Ohio Wesleyan 22-10.

Muskingum ended the contest with 18 hits, including belting eight doubles. Sophomore Nate Mejia led the attack going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Eddie Harper, sophomore Michael Pagano, senior Austin DeVore and senior Dallas Allan all had two hits. Pagano and senior Matt Lynn reach registered three RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Bryce Husted earned his first career win after tossing five innings and allowing five hits and one run, with five strikeouts. Senior Brandon Bush notched the save after throwing the final four innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits.

Muskingum next plays New Jersey City on Wednesday, March 8. Game time is slated for 9:15 a.m.

Monday, March 6 - The Muskingum baseball team dropped a twinbill on Monday at the MattRuss Invitational in Florida against Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Engineers won the opener 1-0 and took the nightcap, 15-1.

In the opener, Austin Lindner hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to lift WPI to the win. WPI ended the outing with nine hits. Mike Vaitkunas fired a complete game five-hitter with three strikeouts to notch the win.

Muskingum was led by senior Matt Lynn who logged a pair of hits. Senior Joe Shumar added a double. Sophomore pitcher Evan Hinds (0-1) went 7.1 innings and allowed nine hits with six strikeouts and one run.

In game two, WPI erupted for 15 runs on 22 hits to complete the sweep. Muskingum's lone run came in the fourth inning on Nate Mejia's sacrifice fly that scored Shumar.

Muskingum (0-3) hits the field next against St. Vincent on Tuesday, March 7. Game time is slated for 9:00 a.m.

Sunday, March 5 - The Muskingum baseball team fell in its season opener against Montclair State in 11 innings at the RussMatt Invitational on Sunday, 3-2.

Muskingum took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Montclair State tied the game with a sacrifice fly with one out and won the game in the 11th on a sacrifice fly with one out. 

The Muskies ended the outing with two runs on seven hits with a pair of errors. Montclair State mustered three runs on 11 hits with one error.

Senior Austin DeVore led the Muskies going 2-for-4 with one run and a double. The sophomore tandem of Michael Pagano and Nate Mejia each had an RBI. Sophomore Darien Smith started the game and went 4.1 innings and allowed one hit with five strikeouts. Sophomore Patrick McGinty took the loss after tossing 1.2 innings of relief, with one unearned run on four hits.

Muskingum hits the field next for a doubleheader against WPI on Monday, March 6. Game time is slated for 2:30 p.m.
