Muskie Awards

The Muskingum University Athletic Department has announced that a total of 17 student-athletes have been recognized for their achievements both in the classroom and on the field.

Freshman cross country and track athlete Julie Fobes (Marietta) and freshman baseball second baseman Logan Roberts (Cincinnati/McNicholas) were presented with the William F. Lange Outstanding Freshmen Awards.

Fobes helped anchor the women’s cross country team as an NCAA Regional qualifier and finished in the top third of the field at the OAC Championships. On the track, Fobes set the school record in the indoor mile with a time of 5:20.86 at the OAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Additionally, Fobes scored for the Muskies at both the OAC Indoor and Outdoor Championship events.

Roberts is third on the team with a .346 batting average with 21 RBIs, three doubles and one triple. He leads the team with five multiple RBI games and has recorded a team-best 14-game hitting streak. Roberts is second on the squad in multiple hit games with 13.

Junior women’s basketball guard and golf athlete Hannah Mountjoy (Danville, Ky.) and senior football defensive end and wrestler Luke Weber (Loudonville) and senior football running back and track athlete Alvin Taylor (Steubenville) were honored with the Ann White and Roy “Red” Turner Strive for Excellence Awards.

Mountjoy played in eight basketball games and averaged nearly five minutes per outing. On the golf course, Mountjoy is Muskingum’s top golfer and ranked in the top 30 of the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Weber helped anchor the Muskie defensive line and ended the season with 32 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. He also recovered one fumble. On the wrestling mat, Weber led the Muskies with 19 wins, which included a team-best nine falls. This marks the second straight year that Weber has been honored with the Roy “Red” Turner Strive for Excellence Award.

Taylor led the Muskie football squad with 353 kickoff return yards. He was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week following his 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Marietta on November 16. He also added 44 yards rushing and 16 yards receiving. On the track, Taylor was named All-Ohio Athletic Conference as a member of Muskingum’s 4x400 relay team. This marks the second time (2012) that Taylor has been honored with the Roy “Red” Turner Strive for Excellence Award.

Softball outfielder Kayley Bevard (Nashport) and track athlete Tanisha Ford (Conneaut) were recognized as the Barbara Steiner Outstanding Senior Female Athletes, while football offensive lineman Denny Ardman (Canal Fulton/Northwest) was acknowledged as the William G. Moore Outstanding Senior Male Athlete.

Bevard leads the Muskies and ranks second in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a .500 batting average. She has belted 63 hits with 17 RBIs, six doubles, one triple and one home run. Bevard was honored for her outstanding play earlier this spring by being named the OAC Softball Hitter of the Week. Last year, Bevard was named NFCA Third Team Division III All-American, First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference, First Team All-Central Region, Academic All-OAC and was named to the CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 Softball Team.

Ford is a four-time national qualifier in the weight throw and hammer throw and holds the Muskingum records in both events (hammer 163-3 / weight 55-0.25). She finished 13th in the nation in the weight throw at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. Ford is a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference champion and two-time All-Ohio honoree. She has scored in all eight OAC Championship events and holds the stadium record at Denison in the weight throw.

Ardman is a three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree, including being a two-time First Team selection. He has been honored twice with OhioCollegeFootball.com All-Ohio accolades and was named to the D3football.com All-North Region Second Team. Ardman served two years as a captain and was honored as the Team MVP for three years.

Senior volleyball outside hitter Hanna Rose (Brookville) and senior men’s basketball guard Dave Brown (Coshocton) were honored with the Ohio Athletic Conference Clyde Lamb Award.  Criteria for the award include at least two years participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution.

Rose, an early childhood education major, also minors in psychology. Rose is a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree and was named the OAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month in September 2013. She received Honorable Mention All-OAC accolades in 2012 and has been named the OAC Volleyball Player of the Week. Rose ranks second all-time in kills in a match with her 26-spike effort against Marietta in 2012 and has earned all-tournament team accolades five times. In 2013, Rose ranked in the top 10 of the OAC in kills per set (2.6) and in 2012 ranked in the top 10 in the league in total kills (366), kills per set (3.2) and points per game. Rose has been on the Dean’s List multiple times and is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary. She serves as the fundraising chair and intramural chair for the Chi Alpha Nu sorority and has volunteered for various community projects including Pick Up New Concord, Adopt a Highway and Relay for Life.

Brown is an intervention specialist major. He is a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection (2nd Team 2013 / HM 2014), an Academic All-OAC honoree and was named to the CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 Men’s Basketball Team. He led the league in scoring in 2013 (17.2 ppg) and was honored with OAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades. Brown holds the school record for consecutive free throws made (45), best free throw shooting percentage for a season (.926), best free throw percentage for a game (16/16), most free throws made in a game (16) and career free throw shooting percentage (.903). Brown’s community involvement includes working in the food pantry at New Life Ministries.

Senior softball student assistant Jessica White (Waterford, Mich./Mott), senior volleyball setter Erin Higham (Rocky River), senior men’s basketball guard Phil Ellis (Copley), senior men’s basketball guard Isaiah Shakespeare (Cleveland/Central Catholic), senior football offensive lineman Fred Lowe (East Liverpool), senior football defensive lineman Evan Wiggall (Grove City/Grove City Christian) and senior baseball pitcher Colten Maxwell (Zanesville) were all honored with the Greg Riggar Dedication to Sport Award.  The award is bestowed upon senior student-athletes at Muskingum who show excellence in associated areas of dedication to sport, leadership, and practice habits.  The athlete must have participated for all four years of his/her collegiate career, be held in high esteem by his/her fellow teammates and also exhibit the qualities of loyalty and discipline.
