Muskingum Athletic Facilities

Welcome to the Muskingum University athletic facilities site.

Muskingum currently offers 25 varsity sports, with 20 competing at the NCAA Division III level. Muskingum athletics features various quality athletic venues listed below. Muskingum hosts more than 100 NCAA events a year featuring over 500 student-athletes, which attract thousands of visitors to Muskingum’s campus and athletic facilities.

Bullock Health and Wellness Complex
Muskingum’s Henry D. Bullock Health and Wellness Complex (BHWC), the largest capital project in its history, will dramatically expand and enhance facilities to support academic programs, athletics, recreation, and well-being. Construction began in the summer of 2020 on the 119,000-square-foot complex, and the grand opening occurred on September 17, 2022, during Muskingum's 100th Homecoming.

The first floor features two spaces – the main entrance lobby and the outdoor concourse. The lobby provides access to indoor concessions as well as to the upper levels of the facility. The concourse provides hospitality facilities – including expanded concessions and ample restrooms – to serve the stadium's new traditional and non-traditional fully-accessible spectator seating.

The second floor is home to the 200-meter regulation indoor track surrounding a 60-yard turf field that serves varsity athletic teams, intramural sports, and recreational activities. The main corridor overlooks the outdoor field and is home to the fitness area and diagnostic hub. The fitness area offers advanced equipment in a location allowing seamless integration of workout routines with the use of the track and turf field for campus students, faculty, and staff. The diagnostic hub is equipped with diagnostic and training technology, and connectivity for telehealth collaborations with regional healthcare professionals, businesses, and educational institutions.

The third-floor mezzanine offers multi-purpose classrooms to meet the instructional needs of our expanding interdisciplinary programs and to support community education offerings. On game days, these areas – which overlook the outdoor field – serve as VIP spaces, media rooms, and coaches' boxes. Casual seating overlooking the indoor field provides a relaxed gathering space for students and visitors, and bleachers around the upper oval provide spectator seating for indoor track meets and other fieldhouse events.

Anne C. Steele Center
In 1986, Muskingum proudly opened the doors of its new Recreation Center, which was named the Anne C. Steele Center in the spring of 2016 in honor of Muskingum’s 20th president. Since then, students, faculty, staff, athletes, and the New Concord community have utilized this 117,000-square-foot facility. The facility features the multi-million dollar Cooper Wing, a football locker complex, the Kalnow Center, a state-of-the-art athletic training center, and state-of-the-art basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, and soccer locker rooms.

The beautiful Steele Center features a 2,500-seat varsity gymnasium with a videoboard; a 6,000 square-foot weight room that includes 15 half racks (each with 450 lbs.), 50 pairs of dumbbells, three ham-glute machines, two back stations, and 13 jump/stretch/flex band stations.

This elevator-equipped facility features a racquetball court; batting cages; an aerobics room; locker rooms for athletic and visiting teams, officials, faculty, and students; seminar rooms; staff offices, and a laundry room. Additionally, the Steele Center houses the John Glenn Gym Area. This portion of the facility encompasses one full-size basketball court, used extensively for varsity practices, intramurals, and other recreation. The Performance Court is home for the Muskingum basketball teams. This varsity gymnasium features a pressbox equipped with utility lines, dual-LED scoreboards, a state-of-the-art sound system, and the Muskie Skybox, which overlooks the court.

Sherman Field
On October 4, 1986, Muskingum announced that the field in McConagha Stadium would be named The Edgar A. Sherman Field.

Over the course of his 34-year career, Mr. Sherman ('36) served as football coach, athletic director, and as a member of the faculty. One of the most successful coaches in the history of college football, Mr. Sherman was the first Division III coach inducted into the National Football Foundation's College Hall of Fame. From 1967 to 1979, Mr. Sherman was a leading figure in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), serving as secretary and treasurer. He served as chairman of the committee that led the efforts to create the nationwide divisional structure - Divisions I, II, and III - within the NCAA.

In the summer of 2016, Muskingum installed the state-of-the-art FieldTurf Revolution 360 on Sherman Field. Named after the concept of completeness, the Revolution 360 fiber features optimal durability, resilience, and feel. The first complete fiber. Revolution 360 was subjected to Penn State University's Sports

Surface Research Center’s aggressive 150,000 cycle Lisport Wear Testing and received a perfect score of 10. This result has yet to be matched by competing turf fibers.

Johnson Family Track
The Johnson Family Track, which was made possible by the generous donations of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Johnson, is the home of the Muskie track & field teams.

The facility was renovated in the summer of 2012 with a state-of-the-art Beynon BSS 300 track. The Beynon BSS 300 is a durable, all-weather, flood and chip sandwich system with excellent shock absorption and the highest return of energy. The Dual Durometer Sandwich system features a paved-in-place Polyurethane basemat, topped with a two-component seal coat and finished with a flow-applied layer of two-component Polyurethane and embedded texture.

In addition to the track facility, Muskingum boasts more than three miles of wooded and grass trails that are used for cross country training.

Mose Morehead Field
Mose Morehead Field is the home of the Muskingum University baseball team.

Muskingum dedicated the facility in honor of Charles "Mose" Morehead during the 1987 season. Morehead coached the baseball team at Muskingum for 14 years and served as head of the college’s language department for 40 years.

The infield features crushed brick and is surrounded by lush Kentucky bluegrass. The facility is equipped with batting cages, ProGrass Turf bullpens, dugouts, utility lines, a new L.E.D. state-of-the-art scoreboard, a public address system, bleachers, an underground irrigation system, windscreening on the outfield fence, restrooms, and a concession stand. In the spring of 2012, Muskingum dedicated its new state-of-the-art press box for Mose Morehead Field, which has greatly enhanced the game-day experience for all fans. The project was made possible through generous donations from alumni, friends, and supporters of the Muskingum baseball program.

Furthermore, a reason for excitement in the baseball program is the ProGrass Turf on Sherman Field and the North Athletic Turf Field. This gives the Muskies two top-notch practice fields to utilize when wet conditions prohibit play on their home field.

Donna J. Newberry Field
The Muskingum University softball team trains and competes in the finest facilities in the region.

The facility has hosted numerous Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Tournaments and seven NCAA Central Region Softball Tournaments.

North Athletic Turf Field
Expanding its investment in athletics, Muskingum developed a second, multi-purpose turf athletic field located on the north campus to accommodate additional athletic events and practices.

The new turf field, which features a videoboard, will host men's and women's soccer and men's and women's lacrosse competitions and can also host football practices as well. With the completion of its second turf field, Muskingum becomes one of only a select number of NCAA Division III institutions in the region with multiple turf athletic venues.

Moorehead Farm
This unique farm was donated to the University by the family of 1923 graduate and award-winning film and television actor Agnes Moorehead. Moorehead Farm is located seven miles from campus and is home to the University’s cross country courses and outdoor archery ranges. The facility was inaugurated in Fall 2021. Muskingum is one of only two universities in Ohio with a dedicated cross country course and one of only several with a dedicated outdoor archery range. The cross country facility has three primary collegiate courses for 5K, 6K, and 8K races and can also configure to a 4K collegiate short course. The flexibility also allows the University to create races that meet the needs of other segments of the running community, including middle and high school. The University is the only OAC school to field an archery team and one of the only NCAA schools in Ohio to offer archery as a varsity sport. The archery ranges host the program’s two outdoor seasons: 3D Outdoor and Outdoor Target. Muskingum also plans to host camps and clinics to introduce young students to the sport. The address of Moorehead Farm is 13747 Claysville Road, New Concord, Ohio 43762.

The Arena
The Arena located in Boyd Science Center is the home of the Muskingum esports program. The Arena houses 27 high-end gaming machines and provides the team with optimal connectivity to compete in competitive online gaming through the East Coast Athletic Conference and the Great Lakes Esports Conference.
